Callaway Wedges Add Improved Play To The Short Game

Practice, practice, practice and practice some more may be the mantra voiced when any golfer sets out to improve the short game. The short game is tricky, employing a number of different type clubs as well as ball striking techniques. This practice makes for that elusively perfect shot. You know – the one you see on television where the touring pro smacks it from 100 yards out spinning it and stopping it inches from the hole.

A wedge is designed to produce this shot shaping control aspect of one’s game. Most advanced golfers carry a number of wedges, each designed for a specific function. In fact, some wedges have varying lofts based on distance while others have different face angles for hitting under different conditions, like from within a bunker. Wedge selection can be critical to the overall game considering that 70 percent of all golf shots taken on a course tend to be between 15 to 100 yards out. Getting that back-spinning roll on your green approach shot is produced by both the amount of loft and the grooves on the face of the club working together. The loft determines the angle by which the ball is hit, producing a particular trajectory which, in terms of a wedge shot, is designed to lift the ball high. Most really low handicapped golfers carry at least four different wedges. This is serious golf. Many beginning golf sets include only two – a sand wedge and a pitching wedge. A pitching wedge is an incredibly versatile tool to carry in one’s bag. It is commonly used with a full swing to achieve distances more than 100 yards or so. The lofts of between 42-49 degrees produce high shots when clearing obstacles like trees come into play. These type shots also produce a low degree of ball bounce allowing for better placement control.

Gap-type wedges carry the same traditional loft of a pitching wedge with a slightly more degreed angle – usually from 48-54. As the name implies, these type wedges are used in distances and circumstances where neither a pitching or sand wedge would do. A gap wedge shot could reach a distance up to a hundred yards.

Sand wedges are designed with the greatest degree of loft – usually between 54-58 – plus are designed for shorter distances exploding the ball from the bunker up to 90 yards. Although its name suggests the surface from which it makes contact, players have discovered the sand wedge versatility in a variety of short game shits from the rough, muddy areas and other non-traditional lies that might need an extra lift to send the ball on the proper line to the hole.
